You can make images in ChatGPT for free, but only with an account. Step one is a free sign-up. After that, the limits, the prompts and what you upload are what decide how good your results are.
This guide is for students, small business owners and first-time users in Nigeria who want a poster, a product photo or a clean edit without paying a designer. It covers free versus paid, the steps on web and phone, eight prompts you can copy, how to edit your own photo, what never to upload, and who owns the result.

A good image prompt names the subject, the setting, the style and the exact words you want printed on it. Anything you leave out, the model guesses.
What is free and what is paid
OpenAI's current image model, ChatGPT Images 2.5, began rolling out on 8 September 2026 to ChatGPT users across all tiers on web, desktop and mobile, according to OpenAI's announcement. Free accounts get it with limits.
| Plan | Image creation |
|---|---|
| Free | "Limited image creation" on OpenAI's pricing page. ChatGPT tells you when you reach the limit, and the limit resets over time |
| Go | "More image creation" than Free |
| Plus | "More complex and accurate image creation", plus Images with thinking |
| Pro | "Unlimited and faster image creation", subject to OpenAI's abuse guardrails |
OpenAI does not publish a number for the free plan, so ignore any post that promises "three free images a day". Your app shows your real limit the moment you hit it. When that happens, wait for the reset or upgrade inside the official app or at chatgpt.com. Never pay a reseller for "unlimited ChatGPT", and check that your bank card allows international dollar payments before you try to upgrade. Details are on OpenAI's pricing page and in its free plan FAQ.
Start from the Images page
Open chatgpt.com/images and you land on a page with a "Describe a new image" box, an attach button for your own photo, and a gallery of ready styles. On 24 October the gallery showed Aerial view, Collector's tin, '80s flashback, Caricature, Sketch, Stickers, Photo booth, Y2K digicam, Anime, 70s portrait, Impressionist painting, Pin collection, Underwater, 3D avatar, Acrylic painting and Felted miniature, with more after you log in.
Pick a style tile when you want a look fast. Type your own description when you want something specific, like a shop poster with exact words.
How to create an image on the web
These steps follow OpenAI's Images in ChatGPT help page.
- Go to chatgpt.com and log in. A free account works.
- Open Images from the sidebar, or start a new chat and type "Create an image of..." with your description.
- Choose an aspect ratio in the picker, or write it in the prompt, for example "square for Instagram" or "tall for a WhatsApp status".
- Wait for the image, then ask for changes in the same chat.
- Save, copy or share the image from the Images page once you are happy with it.
How to create an image on your phone
- Install the ChatGPT app only from Google Play or the App Store, and confirm the publisher is OpenAI.
- Log in with the same account as the web.
- Open Images from the menu, or write your request in a new chat.
- Images 2.5 adds templates such as Poster and Merch, and an @Sketch option on mobile, so check the app for them.
- Open the finished image and save it to your phone.
Eight prompts to copy
Replace the details with your own. Every prompt below follows the same five parts: subject, setting, style, exact text and format.
| Use | Prompt |
|---|---|
| Shop poster | A square poster for a phone accessories shop in Ikeja. Clean white background, a phone and a charger in the centre, bold blue text that reads "Fast Chargers, 3 Months Warranty". Flat modern design, plenty of empty space. |
| WhatsApp status ad | A tall 9:16 promo for a jollof rice and chicken delivery in Lekki. Warm kitchen colours, a steaming plate in the centre, large white text that reads "Lunch delivered by 1pm". |
| Event flyer | A flyer for a church youth conference. Deep blue background, gold lettering that reads "Youth Conference 2026, Saturday 12 December, 10am", a simple crowd silhouette at the bottom. |
| Birthday card | A cheerful birthday card with an ankara pattern border and the words "Happy Birthday, Ada" in the middle. Bright colours, no other text. |
| Product photo | Photo of a handmade leather bag on a light wooden table, soft window light, shallow depth of field, no text, no logos. |
| School diagram | A clear labelled diagram of photosynthesis for secondary school students, white background, large readable labels, simple flat colours. |
| Class presentation | A flat illustration of a solar panel on a rooftop in a Nigerian city at midday, bright sky, no text. |
| Logo idea | A simple logo concept for a fabric shop called "Tola Fabrics", one colour on a white background, clean lines, no gradients. |
Three habits make these better. Put the exact words you want printed inside quotation marks. Say what to leave out, such as "no logos". Change one thing at a time when you refine, so you can see what caused the difference. Text inside images can still contain misspellings, so read every word before you post. The same plain method is in our prompt engineering guide.
How to edit a photo
- Upload your photo with the attach button, then describe the change in the chat. For example: "Keep the person the same. Replace the background with a plain light grey wall."
- Or use the selection tool. Open the image, choose Select, highlight the area and describe the change. OpenAI says highlights are not always precise and edits can spill beyond the area you marked.
- Compare the result with your original. Faces, hands and small text are the usual weak points.
- Never use an edited photo for an ID, a passport or an exam form.
What not to upload
OpenAI's Image Inputs FAQ says images follow the same data approach as other content. On Free, Plus and Pro personal accounts, OpenAI's Data controls page says sharing is on by default, and you can switch off "Improve the model for everyone" under Settings, Data controls. See Data controls in ChatGPT.
As a rule, do not upload:
- NIN slips, BVN details, passports, driver's licences, bank cards or exam documents
- photos of children, or of other people without their permission
- screenshots that show phone numbers, account balances or private chats
- confidential work files or client photos

Who owns the image, and can you sell it?
OpenAI's Terms of Use, effective 1 January 2026, say you keep your rights in what you put in and own the output, to the extent the law allows. The terms add that similar outputs can be given to other users, and they bar you from presenting AI output as human made. Whether a purely AI-made image can hold copyright depends on the country, so ask a lawyer before building a brand logo or a paid contract on one.
For commercial use:
- Do not ask for images of real brands, celebrities or characters you have no rights to. That risk sits with you.
- Do not use someone else's photo in an advert without consent.
- Say so when a client or platform asks whether an image is AI-made.
OpenAI says it uses C2PA metadata and invisible watermarking to help identify its images, per its announcement.
How Gemini compares
Google's Gemini image page says its free model, Nano Banana 2, handles text in images, photo combining and editing, while a newer model needs a Google AI plan and paid plans get higher limits. On Google's Help page, you open Images from the menu, enter a prompt, and edit by tapping Chat under an image. Downloads are 2K with a Google AI plan or 1K without, and editing images is for users 18 and over. Our report Gemini 4 Argon: Who Gets It and What It Costs covers Google's newer model.
Both tools create and edit images from a chat and both have a free tier. Run the same prompt in each and keep the one whose results you prefer.
Common errors and fixes
- "You have reached your limit": wait for the reset shown in the app, or move to a paid plan.
- The text on the image is wrong: retype it in quotation marks and ask for that text only.
- The photo changed too much: say "keep the face and clothes exactly the same, change only the background".
- The request is refused: safety rules block some content. Reword it or choose another subject.
- Images load slowly: use Wi-Fi, because generation needs a steady connection.
