Anthropic has launched Claude Duet, a research preview of a proactive AI agent that sends you a morning brief, works on tasks in the background and only interrupts you when something needs a decision. Anthropic announced it this week (Thurrott reported it on 21 October, TechCrunch on 22 October). It runs on Claude Opus 5.5 and access is through a waitlist. Anthropic's page lists it for US subscribers only, so Nigerian and African users cannot count on access.

Duet is "a proactive agent that understands what needs your attention," according to Anthropic's official Claude Duet page.

What Claude Duet does

Per Anthropic's page, Duet reads across your connected apps, drafts next steps and waits until something needs you. It can take on larger jobs such as scheduling a meeting or building a dashboard and report back when they are done. It reuses your existing Claude memory, skills and apps, and Anthropic says it works with more than 6,000 connectors and plugins.

TechCrunch adds that Duet runs tasks on its own virtual machine, can make online purchases through Stripe's Link wallet or Shopify's Shop Pay, and uses a new classifier to screen messages for sensitive information. By default it declines requests for credit card numbers and government ID. TechCrunch also says it does not trade securities or move money between accounts.

Thurrott says the examples include financial and sales forecasts, prototypes and web apps.

Where it fits

The agent race is crowded. Thurrott names Gemini Spark, Meta Muse, Microsoft Autopilot and OpenAI Dots as rivals. It says the timing suggests Anthropic "was caught a bit flat-footed" and that, unlike those options, Duet is "specifically for work, not everyday tasks."

Who can use it, and what it costs

  • Access: waitlist only, research preview, on iOS, Android and the web at claude.ai.
  • Plans: Pro and Max. Anthropic says Team and Enterprise are not included yet.
  • Region: Anthropic's page says US. TechCrunch's report does not mention a US limit, so check the waitlist page for your country.
  • Price: no separate price. Anthropic says Duet shares your plan's usage limits and that its background checks count toward them.

What this means for Nigerian and African users

If you run a small business or freelance on a Claude plan, Duet is the kind of tool that could cut hours of inbox and scheduling work. Anthropic says Duet shares your plan's usage limits and "uses them differently than a typical conversation." It adds that larger tasks, like building a financial model or a deck, "require more model turns and background work," so heavy use may use your allowance faster.

The US-only wording matters more. Anthropic has not said when other regions follow. Do not pay for a higher plan just to join a waitlist.

Safety and limits

Anthropic says Duet "asks you before sensitive operations like sending messages or paying." It also says approvals, logins and safety checks "run in your own cloud computer, so sensitive details stay private." You can see what it has done and steer it.

The company is also candid about weaknesses. It says Duet "may misread a thread or miscalibrate what's urgent" and can miss something that arrives between check-ins. For a tool meant to decide what deserves your attention, that is the main risk to weigh.

When will Duet open to everyone?

  • When Duet opens beyond the US, and whether Nigeria is included.
  • How many waitlisted users are let in and how fast.
  • How much usage a normal day of background checks will consume.
  • Whether a Team or Enterprise version will come, and at what price.
  • How well the sensitive-data classifier performs outside Anthropic's own testing. We have not tested Duet ourselves and have no independent results.
Anthropic says the preview "may misread a thread or miscalibrate what's urgent," so treat Duet's priorities as suggestions.
